Dr. Amarjit Chhatwal charged with DUI

BRIDGEPORT — A Fairfield podiatrist was charged for drunk driving on Friday after police found him slumped in his car at a city intersection.
Dr. Amarjit Chhatwal, who lives in Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield, had his blood-alcohol levels at 0.1663, which is more than twice the legal limit, police said.
Chhatwal faced charges for driving under the influence of alcohol and was released after posting $500 bond.
Police said that they went at the intersection of Maplewood and Hancock avenues, early on Friday morning to rescue an unresponsive man in a car. When they arrived, officers found that the car had stopped in the intersection. The engine was still running but the driver had passed out inside, police said.
Police said that when the officers knocked on the windows of the locked car to wake up Chhatwal, the car instead jerked forward towards the middle of the intersecting road.
Officers were forced to repeatedly yell and knock on the windows in an effort to wake the driver up. Finally, after a while, Chhatwal came back to senses, drove the car in park and unlocked the doors, police said.
Police said that his eyes were bloodshot and glossy, and when he tried to explain where he was coming from, his speech was slurred. He said that he was returning home from a bar in Orange where he had three beers.
Police said that he failed in the field sobriety test and was thus taken to the state police barracks where he could be tested on the intoximeter.
