Dr. Walton James Montegut, been put on Probation

Dr. Walton James Montegut, who is a plastic surgeon at New Contours in Newport Beach, had his medical license put on three years probation, starting from last Friday, by the Medical Board of California.
His bio on his New Contours website states that Dr. Montegut’s compassionate approach with his patients has earned him a loyal patient following.
His artistic work has given unique outcome for the patients which is a positive proof of his talent. Dr. Montegut’s has enhanced his practice dramatically because of his mastery on Fat Transfer. Fat transfer is a sub specialty in itself and it raises the bar in perfection for plastic surgery.
The Medical Board does not only mentions about Montegut’s perfection but also lays out discipline on him for his gross negligence in care and treatment of four patients. The Stipulated Settlement and Disciplinary Order was signed by the plastic surgeon and his lawyer Henry Lewin on Nov. 3, last year.
A 63 year old woman had fat transfer procedures done on her face and upper and lower extremities on Sept. 15, 2008 and a local procedure to her face on Aug. 20, 2009. She again went for breast augmentation and tummy tuck procedure on Oct. 27, 2009, butt lift procedure on Aug. 30, 2010, and a breast implant replacement surgery on June 5, 2011. When asked by medical board of investigators, Montegut could not produce the history of physical examination and pre and postoperative photographs. He did not properly format or dated progress notes on the patient.
That patient also had to receive 55 prescriptions for controlled substances to treat pain, fight anxiety and induce sleep. She had to take 60 to 100 pills a month for five long years, as per the board.
A 59 year old woman had a history of narcolepsy and used an appetite suppressant phentermine daily. She received botox treatments and phentermine prescription refills from Montegut. He gave her 500 tablets at a time, from August 2007 to August 2011. She received 200 pills every two months until Jan. 7, 2014. Montegut did not have any records for such history of the patient. She continued getting refills through the doctor till three more years after the last visit that is noted in his office.
Montegut didn’t record any history, performed any physical exam or took photographs in the case of the 42-year-old woman who visited him in October 2007 and got fat transferred to her face in the summer of 2008. Records have that she received 25 Xanax and Ambien prescriptions for 40 months from 2009 to 2013, but nothing was listed as the reason for long-term use of such powerful medications.
There was another 58-year-old patient, who made five visits to him from Oct. 7, 2008, through April 29, 2009. He got fat injections, face and neck lift, skin excisions, liposuction, eyelid repair, nose job and scar revision. Montegut’s records still show no history, physical examinations or photographs.
The man received 49 prescriptions for zolpidem and alprazolam from August 2008 through April 2014. Montegut’s records only had zolpidem in the list and there was no reason quoted for such long term use of the drugs.
During his probation, Montegut is required to complete courses on medical ethics, education, medicine prescribing and record-keeping. His practice will be monitored by the state, he is expected to obey all laws and provide progress reports to the board. He has to appear for further board interviews and inform hospitals and clinics where he has privileges, about his probation.
According to the board, if he fails to abide by the conditions, it could lead to revocation of his license.
