My friend recently let on a shocking secret about Andrew Weiss Gallery, one that claims to be the fount of creativity and art. There were photographs of 1962 sold by the gallery of Marilyn Monroe under the claim that they were taken by George Barris and signed by him supposedly as well. However, this was TOTALLY FALSE! A collector who my friend knows, purchased three pictures in this lot from the Andrew Weiss Gallery which were supposedly clicked and signed by George Barris in Malibu. Once they were appraised, it was eventually discovered that Barris never signed these photos and they were basically worthless. Andrew Weiss, when contacted about refunding the client, did not take the call but an employee took the call, promising that Weiss would contact the aggrieved party upon his return after a few weeks. This call never came and again when the person called, the same story was repeated that Weiss was out of town for a few weeks but would call back in good time. This is when this person realized that he had just been ripped off in an art fraud!

In fact, another agency has extensively covered this matter, stating how a client came to them with concerns relating to the authenticity and value of Marilyn Monroe’s photographs reportedly taken by George Barris. The items were sold by the Andrew Weiss Gallery and OneWestPublishing through eBay. The photographs were found to be counterfeit ones by a team of forensic experts. The signatures were also forged. The sellers have been misleading the general public for several years with such fraudulent items. The owners do not have any rights to license, reproduce, distribute or negotiate the work of George Barris. Barris, as discovered by this agency, is still the only copyright holder of these images that were claimed to be owned by these two parties. In reality, only The Marilyn Monroe Weston Editions Limited prints were purchased by Andrew Weiss Gallery and nothing else. If you’ve been thinking of buying artwork from this gallery, you now know that you should STAY AWAY by all means. I just hope that someone gives these guys a taste of their own medicine!
