AutoCheck (or affiliated parties) harvests the addresses of advertisers offering cars for sale on the internet (in my case, Craigslist). They send a phony letter pretending to be an interested individual who is ready to buy but wants the seller to get an AutoCheck report first. Those letters are clearly form letters but deceptively personal (“my sister and I” or similar). They act like as soon as you buy the report, the sale is pratically a done deal. Needless to say, once you order the report, you’ll never hear from them again. I received a couple of these phony letters in a matter of just a couple of days. Clearly, this is a very active and aggressive scam. Following the two fraud attempts. Note how these two notes (even though responding to two different ads, and presented as being from two different senders), are almost identical: [email protected] wrote: Hello, My sister and I saw your vehicle advertisement that you put on CraigsList and we are interested in maybe buying it. We have been wanting to get a used car for a few weeks now and this one caught our eye and we can’t wait to see it in real life The tires look in good condition and I’m overjoyed to find a car that is my favorite color. One question though, do you know what the skidpad time is? I enjoy getting all stat technical with my cars. Also, I was wondering if you would be able to get me an autocheck vehicle history statement? You can to obtain one here: carscore.usedcarscore.info It’s like $20 or something, not expensive. Anyways, shoot me an e-mail in a bit and send me that Auto Check so we can talk further. I am pretty sure that I can come see the car this week. We have been looking to recently and this one is exactly what we’ve been looking for, and we cant wait to see it in person. The windows look reliable and I’m overjoyed to find a car with my favorite color. One question though, do you happen to know what the 0-60 time is? I like getting all stat technical with my cars. Also, do you think you would be able to get me an Autocheck vehicle history file? I can give you a link at the end of this email where you can purchase one, it’s like 20bucks or something, not much.
