I recently had an engine failure for a 1999 Mercury Cougar, automatic transmission 6 cylinder vehicle, and both front ball joints as well that were replaced. The total costs from the auto repair shop were $2313.17. My warranty, or non-warranty in reality from C.A.R.S. will only pay $770.00. They only allowed 11.8 hours for the engine, which in reality took every bit of 20 hours plus. They claimed that according to “Michell’s” manual for car repairs that was accurate. The manual they cite is based on a completely assembled “new car” scenario, not a ten year old vehicle and the complications that go with it. They sent the wrong motor initially, and then the motor they sent, which was a salvaged used motor, had damaged parts which my mechanic had to take from my old damaged engine which added time and cost to the repairs. When I bought the warranty from the used car dealer, which I will never deal with again, led me to believe that I would pay a $100.00 deductible, and they would cover up to $50.00 per hour labor. $50.00 an hour shops as it turns out are hard to find, and then it turns out they don’t cover tear downs, replacing fluids, towing costs etc. etc. They seem to do everything possible to not pay a claim. When I called to get an explanation, they just don’t care, and will get abrupt and rude. I have mentioned their name to a number of name brand dealership shops, and other privately owned shops as well as franchise shops, and they do not want to deal with them. Their reputation is miserable with the repair shops that I spoke with. I can’t even locate them on the Better Business Bureau lists. I hope someone can help me get back the excessive out of pocket money I had to spend for repairs that I thought my warranty would cover. Mark Lorain, OhioU.S.A.
