I received an email from Coastline Sales, Inc indicating that my ‘invoice’ was attached to the email. Since this company is totally unknown to me, I declined to open the attachment and instead starting looking for the company name on the Internet. What I came across is actually no surprise and probably the link would not be harmful, but I’m not taking any chances. I have never had any dealings with this company and for them to arbitarily send me an invoice appears to be to be nothing but a fraudulent sales technique wherein an invoice is sent for merchandise not ordered and when the invoice is paid, the merchandise (or in this case, magazine subscription) is started. I have no doubt that some people will simply open the invoice, assume that it is legitimate (even though they can’t remember ordering or buying anything that corresponds to the attachment) and the fraudulent ‘seller’ will have closed another sale. I generally don’t take the time to report such incidences, but the possibility of a malware attack via email attachments made me stop to reason that I’m certainly not the only person who got their fraudulent email and if I could keep one other person from being duped by this company, it will have been worth the effort.
