Dentist William Robert Miller arrested in drug investigation

GREENWOOD, SC – An Upstate dentist has been arrested on Wednesday in a drug investigation.
Dr. William Robert Miller has been charged by the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office for possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession with the intent to distribute another controlled substance and possession with the intent to distribute within the area in one-half mile of a school, as per the deputies’ statement.
As part of an ongoing drug investigation, officers conducted surveillance at Lakelands Dental Arts, on Wednesday.
According to an investigative report, agents saw a Toyota Tundra car parked near the dental clinic that they knew was registered to Miller.
The report states that Miller came out of the dental practice and walked towards the vehicle, a few minutes before 3 p.m. on Wednesday with a brown envelope in his hand.
A man came in a Ford F-250 truck and pulled up near Miller’s vehicle, around 40 minutes later.
Through previous investigations, deputies had identified the F-250 truck as a potential drug delivery vehicle, as per the report.
A man, who was later identified as Russell Mathis, got out of the Ford truck, took the brown envelope from Miller’s car and left immediately.
Deputies then followed the truck and arranged for a traffic stop.
During the search conducted on Mathis and his vehicle, an officer felt some object in his pant’s pocket. Mathis claimed it to be earplugs, but according to the officer, it was a round pouch type object of rubber, which had numerous individually wrapped small pouches of white powder substance.
Officers performed the search in the truck and found several prescription pills, some more white powder substance and paraphernalia drug, as per the report. Gambling ledgers and around $14,000 were also found by the officers.
The powder substance was proved to be cocaine in the field test, the report states.
Mathis was thus charged with trafficking cocaine. He faced two counts each of possession with the intent to distribute within the area of one-half mile of a school and possession of the schedule drugs.
Doctor Miller told an officer that he had no idea that Mathis was leaving cocaine in the truck. When the officer questioned Miller, he grinned and stated that he was just testing the officer and that he knew about Mathis leaving the cocaine in the truck and that it had been done numerous times in the past, as per the report written by an officer.
Since the alleged crimes occurred near Lander University, both of the men were charged for committing drug crimes within one-half mile of a school.
