Frank Parasmo was arrested on Friday for illegally prescribing oxycodone to patients. The 71 year old Long Island doctor knew some of these patients were dug addicts and still gave them large quantities of the drug. He wrote over 6,000 prescriptions for a minimum of 776,000 pills between January 2010 and December 2014.
Parasmo practices in Deer Park and lives in Great River. His wife cosigned a $300,000 bond and he was released by the U.S Magistrate Gary Brown. He did not have to enter a plea. The investigation began when the DEA was informed by a probation officer that the doctor had been prescribing oxycodone to a poly-drug abuser who was in a drug treatment program. Further probing revealed that he prescribed the drug when it was not medically necessary.
He wrote prescriptions for people even when he did not enter in the written records that he had prescribed the opioid. A patient came forward with the information that he hadn’t been physically examined before the doctor gave him a prescription for oxycodone and hydrocodone. This person was an IV drug abuser.
Another patient had admitted to using heroin when he was being treated by Parasmo, and that he popped oxycodone like they were Tic Tacs. He was still prescribed a disproportionate amount of oxycodone by the physician.
Parasmo will face 20 years in prison if convicted.
