Dr. Kesnold Baptiste, a chiropractor from Roselle was accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in illegal kickbacks. His patients were referred to an MRI facility owned by a Paramus man, according to Christopher S. Porrino, state Attorney General on Wednesday. The 50 year old was arrested and charged with conspiracy, health care fraud and commercial bribery. Ata Chaudhry, owner of MRNJ Oradell and Newark and Hudson Radiology Center (New Jersey) illegally gave him money. The 55 year old Chaudhry and 48 year old Tariq Din (owner of Open MRI of Clifton) were also charged, said Porrino in a news release.
The Attorney General’s Commercial Bribery Task Force was formed in January to target commercial bribery in the healthcare industry. It was as a result of the investigations of this Force that Baptiste was arrested.
Chaudhry and Din had pleaded guilty to money laundering, misconduct of a corporate official for paying more than $850,000, conspiracy and commercial bribery. The money was given to more than 15 professionals and physicians in exchange for referrals.
Director of the state Division of Criminal Justice, Elie Honig, said that the type of kickback schemes they were uncovering with the help of the task force have a corrosive impact on the healthcare system. Patients are unnecessarily forced to take diagnostic services and treatments, and costs are inflated for everyone. He said that schemers are being sent an aggressive prosecution with cases like these.
