The man killed in a high-speed car accident was identified as Doctor Kevin J. Gander, he was 51-years old and a physician at OSF St. Anthony Hospital.
A Winnebago County Sheriff said he saw the doctor’s car rushing at a high speed on the Auburn Road that night, at around 10:30 pm. The sheriff tried to catch up with the vehicle, to ask the driver to control his speed limit, but couldn’t. Later, doctor Gander’s car was found crashed near the 9000 block of Auburn Road.
Dr. Gander was pronounced dead on the spot but his autopsy reports are pending.
OSF St. Anthony released a statement saying, “Dr. Gander was well-liked by his patients and co-workers. He will be missed”.
The State Police believes that the doctor killed in the high-speed crash might have been going so fast he didn’t even see the deputy trying to pull him over that night. Doctor Kevin Gander, 51, was not fleeing from deputies but rather something else after which he crashed.
It happened before 1 am on Thursday night in the 9000 block of Auburn. The crash reconstruction team from Illinois State Police has taken over to so that they can retrace the moments, and find out what happened before Doctor Gander crashed.
After a few days of investigation, the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office said, alcohol might have played a role in the car crash and because of that the local doctor died.
Toxicology reports show that Dr. Gander was well above the legal limit of alcohol in his system, that night. He was driving too fast and the crash happened around after 12:15 a.m. on Thursday night, November 24 in the 9000 block of Auburn.
