Northern Michigan doctor Richard Ferguson’s medical license has been suspended after a sex crime conviction. He pleaded guilty to one count of felony: criminal sexual conduct, in Emmet County. This was in August.
In October, he was sentenced to 38 months of prison time, at a minimum. His medical license was suspended in January 2015 by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
Ferguson has sexually assaulted a patient under the pretense of therapy. In his plea, he admitted that he had committed a felony charge of assault with intent to sexually penetrate the woman. According to an Emmet County prosecutor, other charges were dropped as part of his plea deal.
The 60 year old family care physician worked for Little Traverse Bay Family Medicine in Petoskey. He was arrested in April 2014. He treated a female patient for flashbacks and repercussions of sexual abuse when she was younger, in June 2012. That was when he sexually assaulted her. Following this, he made the decision to hire her to work in his office.
As part of her ‘treatment’, Ferguson repeatedly assaulted her, as he believed that would make her comfortable with her sexuality. This was reported by the Sheriff’s office. He tried to have intercourse with the patient during therapy.
