Dr. Robert Anthony Bonzani was released from prison after serving two days of his six month sentence. The urologist was warned by the Judge David Carlson to stay in line and told that he would have to hold down a job. Otherwise, he will be in prison again. The 50 year old doctor had been sentenced after he damaged a Joliet lawyer’s daughter’s tombstone.
Bonzani pleaded guilty to defacing Edward Jaquays’ daughter’s tombstone on Wednesday. Jaquays had previously represented Phyllis, Bonzani’s ex-wife in their divorce case. Jaquays had shown strong compassion towards Bonzani and that was the only reason he was considering letting him out of jail, said Judge Carlson. He said Bonzani owed his release to the grace of Jaquays.
Bonzani’s medical suspense has been suspended for the next three months. However, Judge Carlson made it clear that he had to be employed in this time. He was also told to leave Jaquays’ family alone. He was also asked to do 480 hours of community service. Donald DeWilkins, Bonzani’s attorney said that his client had an offer to work as a painter and would look for researcher positions in the medical field. If he gets so much as a speeding ticket, he will have to do the remaining six months of prison time.
