Dr. Thomas Stavola pleaded guilty to driving drunk when he killed a woman last year. The Middle Island woman’s family said he should only serve two years in prison because they wanted him to help others by practicing medicine after that.
The 56 year old doctor had killed Monica Peterman, a 45 year old mom of three. The accident happened on June 14th, 2014, early in the morning. It happened when he was driving on Route 111 and ran a red light in Smithtown Main Street. Stavola said that he should have known he could have hurt someone because he was drunk when he got into his Audi. His blood alcohol level was 0.10 percent, and the level at which a person is considered to be intoxicated is 0.08 percent.
Monica Peterman worked at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center as a dialysis technician. Her husband said that she was a loving wife and a devoted mother. The 16 months after the accident have been difficult for her family.
Stavola walked away from the accident without calling for help or helping Peterman himself. He was arrested by a police officer shortly afterwards. He could lose his license in the case of a felony conviction.
