Dr. Vijay Vaswani loses medical license

Dr. Vijay Vaswani, on December 24, lost his state medical license. He admitted to use of cocaine a week before, say the State Board of Medical Examiners. He was a vice president at Robert Wood Johnson at Hamilton and oversaw medical staff for breast and general surgery. He was not an employee of RWJ, said a spokesman. He was a voluntary member of the staff, and practiced privately.
On December 17 and 18, he used cocaine. He admitted this himself on December 23. He wrote three people (who were not his patients) prescriptions so that he could get cocaine when he suffered a relapse in 2012. He had been using cocaine and marijuana in college, and tried to kick the habit initially. In 2001, he entered inpatient treatment for substance abuse. This was when he was a general surgery resident. He participated in an anonymous, voluntary program, after which the state medical board allowed him to obtain his license.
He took Xanax in 2006 and was in a car crash. He was charged with driving under the influence. He entered a resolution program again, and was only finished with it in 2011. The state board allowed him to remain part of the voluntary program.
