I, like perhaps hundreds of thousands of Torontonians, am your average job seeker. I apply to 5-10 jobs every day online through various avenues. One day I got an email from a woman named “Julia Torres” who apparently works for an Alberta-based company called “Guro Investments.” She said they decided to hire me (even though I live in TORONTO!!). Keep in mind that I was not called, nor was an interview set up. She said that before I begin to work, I must sign an employee agreement and scan two pieces of government-issued ID – specifically my passport and Ontario driver’s license. She also said to do it within three days or else I will no longer be eligible for the position. She typed in very bad english. Guro Investments actually does exist. They have a website. But strangely, this woman’s name is NOT on the staff list. Hmm… Please do not ever, EVERRR send anyone your documents. I know this Toronto economy is not the best and it’s a little hard to find a job but seriously, don’t fall for any of this nonsense. This is the first email she sent me: I’m pleased to inform you that your resume has been reviewed by the HR department of the company and you are taken to our company. Please take the time to browse the company’s website. Your position have two options full-time or part-time (immediately start) .
