An Erie psychiatrist named Dr. Matthew Ronald DeJohn recently got his medical license suspended by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine for having an inappropriate relationship with one of his 18-year-old female patients. The doctor with an MD degree admitted the fact that he had instructed the said female patient to indulge in a sexual activity by herself as “homework” for one of their regular counseling sessions. These are facts that came to light from the documents filed by the Pennsylvania Department of State on 4th February 2016.
He also exchanged a lot of sexually inclined texts with the patient most of which were sent after midnight.
The suspension occurred with the consent of the doctor who had been licensed since the year 2007. It’s not known that his patients have been getting treated elsewhere since the suspension of his license. The female patient in question was referred to the Doctor for medication management of anxiety disorder, eating disorder, insomnia, and depression in June 2012. According to the documents, the counseling sessions by DeJohn addressed the eating disorder and went on to matters of love, acceptance and the repressed sexual feelings of the patient, all of which were non-issues.
Email conversations between the doctor and the patient occurred on a daily basis during the duration of the patient’s treatment. Some emails were even exchanged when the doctor was on a holiday with his family. These emails were off the record and they weren’t listed in the treatment records nor were they billed. The patient got really involved and often told DeJohn that she loved him and the doctor verbally returned the feeling to her.
In February 2014 when the patient’s family discovered the emails, the patient texted DeJohn telling him that she no longer wanted to seek treatment from him. DeJohn, according to the documents, responded by saying that she was an adult and did not have to stop her visits just because of her parent’s disapproval.
Ultimately, the patient never returned for treatment but the clandestine exchange of emails continued until May 2014 through an anonymous account that had an encrypted service. His misdemeanors also include prescribing Vicodin & Adderall to two people who weren’t even his patients.
The suspension of his medical license is indefinite. Reinstatement is possible but he’ll have to complete a course on maintaining appropriate boundaries at the workplace at a residential center to be reinstated.
