Upon shelling out the initial $375 membership fee, Actors will be invited to pay another $200 to become a “Lifetime Member,” (benefits include a free T-Shirt and Private Coaching). This does not seem particularly unfair until the New Actor’s Orientation, at which time it is revealed that members must pay another $100 to perform in the “Monologue Challenge” at the end of the quarter. The only way to perform in the promised “Off-Broadway” Showcase is by having your resume and headshot approved by the Director, Bobby Holder. He frequently rejects Actors’ resumes, instructing them to consult with his assistant, “actress”-turned-rogue, Renee Iovine for an additional $45. Ignoring the fact that Bobby and Renee create a harsh environment every meeting, delivering their practiced sales-pitch pandering for more and more of your money; The Actor’s Project NYC continues everything that is wrong with the brutal world of unsigned, non-union talent.Mr. Holder slyly makes prospective members feel “chosen” after auditioning in front of him. Obviously, the clever psychology of making me feel as though the “exclusivity” of the membership was something to be acheived convinced me to sign up. Actors new to New York City should beware of this scheme. Every aspect of this organization meant to “help actors” revolves around members giving more than the $375 originally paid. Follow the much-circulated rule: you should never have to pay to work. Current and former members should come together to help prevent aspiring talent from making the same mistake. Here is the Company’s Website, where you can find the emails of Bobby Holder and his assistant, Renee Iovine. Also be sure to file your own report with this website to spread the word.
